Fracture repair using an intramedullary (IM) pin is a common orthopedic procedure in dogs and cats to stabilize long bone fractures.

🦴What is an IM Pin Fracture Repair?

An IM pin (intramedullary pin) is a metal rod (usually made of stainless steel or titanium) that is inserted into the medullary (central) canal of a long bone (e.g., femur, humerus, tibia) to stabilize a fracture.

  • Mid-shaft (diaphyseal) fractures of long bones

  • Simple transverse or oblique fractures

  • Some comminuted fractures (combined with other fixation methods)
